Wheelie mad wheelbarrow race

Mareeba Rotary Wheelie Mad Wheelbarrow Race

In May of each year, the Tablelands plays host to The Great Wheelbarrow Race and every year for as long as Mareeba Rotary can remember they have had a team compete in the iconic race, and in the last few years it has always been two teams.

The 2013 race attracted a record number of entries, with 72 teams, and more than 1000 people participating in this wonderful annual event. In 2013 More than $460,000 was raised for charity.

Mareeba Rotary’s two teams raised a combined amount of $11,500 for the Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation in 2013.  Money that will go towards a new playground at the hospital.

The gruelling 140km Great Wheelbarrow Race may test the endurance of many competitors, but it is largely about having fun and raising money for charity in a team environment. Team building has become a major draw card for competitors from services to major corporations.

Mareeba Rotary never misses out on the fun as you can see from the photo above that was this year’s theme ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’.

The Race is a well established, successful fund raising event held annually during the second weekend in May.

The success of this event, its immense popularity coupled with the extensive regional, state and national profile can be attributed in considerable part to the diverse sponsorships, broad community support and volunteer input received each year.

In 2012 the Mareeba Rotary Club and the great race were featured on Queensland Weekender with the hosts spending the three days with our clubs two teams.
